Several sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common in men, and many can be asymptomatic—which means they can go unnoticed and unintentionally passed to others. Early detection and treatment are key.

🧬 Most Common STIs in Men:

1. Chlamydia

  • Most common bacterial STI

  • Often has no symptoms

  • When present: burning during urination, discharge from penis, pain/swelling in testicles

  • Easily treated with antibiotics

2. Gonorrhea

  • Frequently occurs with chlamydia

  • Symptoms: white/yellow/green discharge, painful urination, swollen testicles

  • Can cause infertility if untreated

3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

  • Most common viral STI

  • Often has no symptoms

  • Can cause genital warts or lead to penile, anal, or throat cancer

  • Vaccine available (recommended up to age 45)

4. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 & HSV-2)

  • Causes genital or oral sores (blisters that break open and heal)

  • Can be spread even without visible symptoms

  • No cure, but antiviral meds can reduce outbreaks and transmission

5. Syphilis

  • Bacterial infection with stages

    • Stage 1: painless sore (chancre)

    • Stage 2: rash, flu-like symptoms

    • Can progress to brain, heart, and nerve damage if untreated

  • Treated with antibiotics

6. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

  • Attacks the immune system

  • Early symptoms: flu-like illness, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes

  • Can be managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART)

7. Trichomoniasis

  • Caused by a parasite

  • Often has no symptoms in men

  • May cause irritation, burning, or slight discharge

  • Treatable with medication

Prevention Tips:

  • Use condoms consistently

  • Get tested regularly (especially if sexually active with new or multiple partners)

  • Get vaccinated (HPV and hepatitis B)

  • Communicate openly with partners about sexual health
