Signs of an Allergic Reaction to a Skincare Product

You might be allergic to a skincare product if you experience a reaction that includes itching, redness, swelling, rash, or burning—especially if these symptoms occur shortly after using it, even with a small amount.

🚨 Signs of an Allergic Reaction to a Skincare Product:

  • Itching or burning shortly after application

  • Redness or a rash, sometimes in streaks or patches

  • Swelling, especially around the eyes or mouth

  • Blisters or hives (in more severe cases)

  • Dry, flaky, or cracked skin that won’t heal with moisturizers

  • Symptoms persist or worsen even after stopping the product

This is different from irritation, which may result from overuse or active ingredients like retinol or acids, and tends to be milder or temporary.

🧪 How to Confirm If You're Allergic:

  1. Stop using the product immediately.

  2. Let your skin heal completely before trying anything new.

  3. Perform a patch test with any new product (more below).

  4. If reactions continue, consult a dermatologist or allergist for allergy testing.

How to Patch Test a Product:

  1. Apply a small amount of product behind your ear or on the inner forearm.

  2. Do this once a day for 3–5 days without washing the area.

  3. Watch for redness, bumps, itching, or burning.

  4. If no reaction appears, it's generally safe to use—but still go slow.
