For women at average risk

The recommended frequency for mammograms can vary slightly depending on health guidelines and personal risk factors, but here are the general recommendations:

For women at average risk:

  • Ages 40 to 44: Optional annual mammograms; discuss with your doctor.

  • Ages 45 to 54: Yearly mammograms are recommended.

  • Ages 55 and older: Mammograms every 1 to 2 years, or continue yearly if preferred.

For women at higher risk (due to family history, genetic mutations like BRCA1/2, or previous chest radiation):

  • Start earlier and screen more frequently, often with both mammograms and MRIs, as recommended by a doctor.
